Frequently Asked Questions
General Questions
Do you accept insurance?
Yes! Our Diabetes Education and Nutrition Counseling (Medical Nutrition Therapy) services can be billed to in-network insurance plans (see list). Many plans cover these services at no out-of-pocket cost to you. Medicare plans only have benefits for these services if you have a diagnosis of diabetes or kidney disease. See our Insurance page for more details.
Health Coaching is a private pay service.
Do you offer telehealth appointments?
Yes! All of our services are available via a secure telehealth platform SimplePractice so you can meet with us from the comfort of your home.
Who are your providers?
Our team includes Registered Dietitians and Registered Nurses who are all Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists (CDCES). Our Registered Nurses are also certified Lifestyle Coaches. We are experienced in all types of diabetes management and up to date on the latest diabetes technology like continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) and insulin delivery devices.
Do I need a referral?
This is a resounding...maybe! It depends on your plan and on the service. If your plan is an HMO, you WILL need a referral; we are considered a “specialist”. Diabetes education will always require an order from your provider but may or may not require a referral. Nutrition counseling (Medical Nutrition Therapy) may or may not require an order or referral. Health coaching does not require an order or referral.
Clear as mud?! It’s confusing...we get it! See our Insurance page for more details and feel free to call or text us with specific questions at (512) 737-4112.
Can I self-schedule?
Yes! Existing clients can self-schedule in SimplePractice. New diabetes education and nutrition counseling clients may submit an inquiry form to get signed up. New health coaching clients will get a link to schedule the first coaching session immediately upon purchase of a health coaching subscription.
Diabetes Education Questions
For what types of diabetes do you provide education?
We provide education and support for Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational Diabetes.
What can I expect in a diabetes education session?
You’ll receive 1:1 personalized education tailored to your needs. We’ll cover blood sugar management, healthy eating, medication use, physical activity, and diabetes technology like CGMs or insulin pumps.
Nutrition Counseling Questions
What is medical nutrition therapy?
Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) is evidence-based nutrition counseling provided by a Registered Dietitian. It helps manage specific health conditions like diabetes, heart disease, or high cholesterol and can also support general wellness and weight concerns. We’ll review your health history, lab values, eating habits, lifestyle, and goals. From there, we’ll create a personalized plan that’s realistic and achievable.
How is this different from seeing a nutritionist?
Our Registered Dietitians are licensed healthcare professionals with advanced training. They provide personalized, science-based care and are credentialed to bill insurance for services.
Health Coaching Questions
What is health coaching and how is it different from nutrition counseling?
Health coaching is a longer-term, client-centered partnership that focuses on your personal health goals—whether that's better energy, improved eating habits, stress management, or consistent routines. It emphasizes goal-setting, motivation, accountability, and navigating barriers to change. Unlike education-based sessions, coaching is more focused on your values, readiness to change, and taking action at your own pace.
What’s included in your health coaching program?
Our health coaching program includes regular coaching sessions, plus access to an AI-powered nutrition and fitness tracking tool to support your progress between visits.
Is health coaching covered by insurance?
No, health coaching is a cash-pay service. However, many clients find the investment worthwhile for the level of ongoing support and personalized care. Some people may be eligible for reimbursement by an HSA plan with a letter of medical necessity from a doctor – you will need to talk to your HSA plan administrator for those details.
Who is health coaching for?
Health coaching is ideal for clients who are ready to make sustainable changes in their health and want a supportive partner to guide them along the way.
