What is High Blood Pressure?
High blood pressure, also called hypertension, happens when the force of blood flowing through blood vessels is too high for too long. Over time this force causes damage to the heart and blood vessels and can lead to heart attack and stroke. It can also affect how well you heart is able to pump blood and can lead to kidney damage, vision loss, and sexual dysfunction.
Be sure to know your blood pressure numbers. Ask what your numbers are at every health care visit.
How is it treated?

Limit the salt in your diet. This includes the salt you add at the table as well as the salt you cook with. Another major source of salt (called sodium on food labels) can come from processed foods like canned food and frozen dinner meals. Read food labels and choose ones that say “no salt” or “reduced salt” on the labels. You can also aim to eat unprocessed foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains every day.

Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity most days of the week. Activities like walking, biking, or playing sports can help keep your heart healthy.

When you are overweight, your heart has to work harder to pump blood through your body. Keeping a healthy weight can help control your blood pressure.

Both smoking and vaping can cause your blood pressure to go up. It also damages your blood vessels and can lead to cardiovascular problems.

Find healthy ways to cope with stress, such as practicing relaxation techniques, spending time with friends and family, or engaging in hobbies you enjoy. If you find that your stress stops you from doing things you enjoy talk to your health care provider.

Many people with diabetes also have high blood pressure. It is important to manage your diabetes in order to keep your blood sugar in your target range. This can help reduce your risk for cardiovascular problems like heart attack, stroke and kidney damage.
