Blood Sugar Testing

What is Type 2 Diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is a health problem where the body has trouble using insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps turn sugar from food into energy. When the body doesn’t use insulin well, sugar builds up in the blood. High blood sugar can cause serious problems if it’s not managed, like heart disease, vision loss, and kidney damage. You may not feel sick or see any changes with Type 2 diabetes. This is why regular check-ups with a doctor are important to catch it early.

Symptoms of Type 2 diabetes may include

  1. Feeling Very Thirsty: You may feel thirsty all the time, no matter how much you drink.

  2. Going to the Bathroom a Lot: You might need to pee more often, even at night.

  3. Feeling Very Tired: You could feel tired and weak, even if you get plenty of sleep.

  4. Blurry Vision: Things might look fuzzy or out of focus.

  5. Cuts or Sores that Heal Slowly: Wounds or cuts might take a long time to heal.

  6. Tingling in Hands or Feet: You might feel a numb or tingling feeling in your hands or feet.

If someone has these symptoms, it’s important to see a doctor to get checked for diabetes.

How is it treated?

Choosing foods, like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can help with weight. Limit sugary drinks and snacks.

Moving your body helps it use insulin better and keeps blood sugar levels more balanced. Try to be active for at least 30 minutes most days. “Exercise” can look very different for each person – move your body as you are able! And always check with your doctor before starting a new exercise plan.

Some people with type 2 diabetes check their blood sugar levels every day. This helps them understand how food, activity, and medicine affect their blood sugar.

Some people need medicine to manage their blood sugar. This could be pills or, in some cases, insulin or other shots. Medicines help keep blood sugar levels steady.
