What is Type 1 Diabetes?
Type 1 diabetes is a disease where the body can’t make insulin, a hormone that helps move sugar from the blood into the body’s cells for energy. Without insulin, sugar builds up in the blood, which can make a person very sick. Type 1 diabetes can happen at any age.
Symptoms of Type 1 diabetes may include:
-
Feeling Very Thirsty: You may feel thirsty all the time, no matter how much you drink.
-
Going to the Bathroom a Lot: You might need to pee more often, even at night.
-
Feeling Very Tired: You could feel tired and weak, even if you get plenty of sleep.
-
Losing Weight Without Trying: Some people with Type 1 diabetes lose weight quickly, even if they’re eating normally.
-
Blurry Vision: Things might look fuzzy or out of focus.
-
Feeling Hungry All the Time: You might feel very hungry even after eating.
If someone has these symptoms, it’s important to see a doctor to get checked for diabetes.
People with Type 1 diabetes often wear continuous glucose monitors and insulin pumps. We can help you better understand these systems and their data reports!
How is it treated?

Since the body can’t make insulin, people with Type 1 diabetes need to take insulin through shots or a pump every day.

Choosing healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats can help manage blood sugar levels. Limit sugary drinks and snacks.

People with Type 1 diabetes need to check their blood sugar levels several times a day. Some people choose to wear blood sugar monitors that check blood sugar levels 24/7.

Moving your body helps it use insulin better and keeps blood sugar levels more balanced. Try to be active for at least 30 minutes most days. “Exercise” can look very different for each person – move your body as you are able! And always check with your doctor before starting a new exercise plan.
